I cant taste as well when drunk?

Lately ive noticed that when i drink at first taking shots is like taking cough medicine, its horrible and nobody likes the taste, but when i start to become intoxicated i have noticed that taking shots isnt bad and anything else i eat or drink doesnt taste as strong, does anybody experience this, is it just the alcohol depressing my reactions?
