Drug abuse or just chronic pain?

My mom has chronic nerve diseas were she is in pain all the time but she takes a medley of vicodin, Percocet, and oxycodone everyday not necessarily taking all of them but more then 4 a day, but she's in a lot of pain and this is the only way she can function. But she is very mean anymore and defensive what's going on? Like ah help
