Miscarriage and d&c procedure ?

i miscarried and had a d&c procedure. baby showed 8w4d when he was supposed to be around 10. got a d&c 2 days after u/s showed no heartbeat, should i have waited? if the fetus was alive, would it survive the procedure? what if i was pregnant with twins and only one miscarried, would the other survive? it's only been 2 days since my procedure and im very heartbroken. im still having dreams about being pregnant and about twins.
